Fly Infestation Pest Control | Housefly and Lesser Housefly

Lesser HouseflyBiology: White, 2mm long eggs are laid in batches up to 50 with an apendage that allows them to float in liquid or semi-liquid decaying organic matter, especially poulty, cow or dog dung. They will hatch out in around 24 hours.

Newly born larvae are around 2mm long, up to 5mm when mature with a light brown body and black head. They have small projecting hairs which allow them to move through liquid food. Pupates after 1-4 weeks, developing in adult after a further 1-4 weeks.

Male and female adults have a grey thorax; Male abdomens have pale yellow patches whilst females are grey. Both have three indistinct brown-black stripes on the front of the thorax, just behind the head.

Their most identifiyng feature are that they habitually will fly in erratic triangular or square patterns, below lights or above lamps.

Treatment: Electric flykillers are NOT to be considered an effective control measure against this species, simply because they are not attracted enough to UV light to reliably enter them, rather they often continue to fly erratically nearby.

Effective hygiene management is the optimum solution here as for houseflies. Non-toxic fly traps can be used as ongoing control measures or aerosol insectidical treatments will kill adults quickly, however ensure coverage of food/prep surfaces and adequate ventilation before and after such treatment.

Heavy infestations, such as can be found in stables or poultry farms may require the application of insecticidal fogs, mists or lavacides that will need professional application.
